Hobbies for Seniors # 1

Seniors have a choice of pursuing a range of hobbies to suit their interests and energy levels. Often a hobby makes you physically and/or mentally active and helps you overcome boredom and stress.

A hobby that I love is growing a small home garden. It provides immense joy to see the seeds sprouting, grow taller and eventually flower and produce vegetables or fruits. You can enjoy some farm-fresh organic vegetables ready to cook at a moment's notice.

You can grow a garden in pots or on a patch of ground. Depending upon how much time you can spare and your interest level, you can decide the size of the garden. Often, it is best to start on pots and extend it on ground. Plant seeds/seedlings north–south to expose the plants to good sunshine. It is better to have climbing plants close to fences.  In winter, you may have to move some of the pot plants inside the home.

In my home, I sowed some of the seeds indoors after the frost and transplanted the seedlings outside some time in May. We had our first harvest of Bell peppers, Bajji Chillies, and Mint leaves. The rose stubs were bought out and planted outside. They endured some of mid-west's unexpected low temperatures. Despite the cold, we have already got over 30/40 flowers.

Here is the link to see my recently-grown home garden.

Enjoy this hobby as much as I do!
